production, processing and marketing of extra virgin olive oil. It is located in the
historic city of Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019, worldly famous
for its Sassi (Caves) , which in 1993 were enlisted as World Heritage ‘UNESCO. Over the years, the company was able to grow in small steps, keeping in mind the importance of a genuine and healthy culture which has the respect of the environment at its first place.
Our company’s history is closely linked to the initiative of its founder Nicola Vitale, who was able to pass on to his children the passion for the land and for one of its most noble and important products extra virgin olive oil. After inheriting and acquiring arable land in Matera, in 1996 Nicola and his wife Angela decided to change its cultivation and plant an olive grove of about 4000 plants of Ogliarola of the Bradano, Coratina, Frantoio, Leccino and Carolea. Thanks to the continuous training on the subject , to the growing passion and the constant commitment of the whole family, after only three years the first fruits arrive, so much so that the company places its extra virgin olive oil, under the trademark “L’Olio dei Sassi“ , at the 1st place in the Olivarum Regional Competition in the Tour of the National Olive Academy in Basilicata.
After this extraordinary result and firmly believing in the potential of this project, the Vitale family looked forward to closing the entire production cycle within the company. In fact, after having entrusted the processing of its olives to an external oil mill for years, in 2014 Cosimo Vitale, the current owner of the brand “L’Olio dei Sassi”, purchased a historic mill in Matera, thus being able to follow and personally take care of the important and delicate phase of the processing phase of their own olives.
Over the years, the company has achieved excellent results paying constant attention to every detail of the production cycle, and it can now supply an increasing number of customers with extra virgin olive oil of superior quality with excellent chemical and organoleptic parameters.
In the current site of the olive mill and packaging workshop, there is a company store where it is possible to taste our extra virgin olive oil which, thanks to an optimal storage method, preserves aromas and flavors throughout the year as if it had just been crushed.
